I.Purpose of Policy
Groovy Kids Online, 501(c)(3) (Groovy Kids) values and respects the privacy of children. The purpose of this policy is to describe Groovy Kids’ commitment to respect and protect the privacy of personal student information and to comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”).
Groovy Kids is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that offers and provides interactive online classes in a range of junior high and high school subjects for students who are seeking supplemental coursework. Groovy Kids collects and maintains children’s personal information through its website and online services directly from children and parents. Groovy Kids contact information is as follows:

III.Types of Information Collected
Groovy Kids collects and maintains information provided by its students.. Some of this information collected may be personally identifiable information. The kinds of information collected by Groovy Kids from children include a child’s full name, online pseudonym or username, email address, age, gender, billing address, and photographs, videos, or audio files which may contain the child’s image or voice. Personal information is collected directly from the child and directly from the parent.
There is also information about a student’s computer hardware and software that is automatically collected by WizIQ virtual classroom and Canvas LMS.. This information can include: an IP address, browser type, domain names, access times and referring web site addresses. This information is used by Groovy Kids and its 3rd party service providers for the operation of the service and to maintain quality of the service.
Once a student has enrolled to take classes with Groovy Kids, parents create an account with Canvas by Instructure, the online course management system utilized by Groovy Kids. Students have access to their account and can edit their account information, which may include the personal information listed above.
Groovy Kids does not require a child to disclose more information than is reasonably necessary to participate in Groovy Kids services.
IV.Storage of Information
Groovy Kids utilizes a “Free For Teachers” account with Canvas by Instructure. The account belongs to the student and is accessible by the teacher. End of course grade reports are download by the teacher and emailed to parents. Groovy Kids utilizes One Drive cloud storage by Microsoft. All grade reports are saved on the Onedrive Cloud and deleted from the teacher’s computer after the end of course email has been sent. We will save grade reports for 5 years. Only the Groovy Kids administrators have access to the Onedrive cloud storage. Groovy Kids also utlizes GoogleDrive as a communication tool between administrators and teachers. The following information may be stored on the Groovy Kids Google Drive Account: student and parents first and last name, student age and parent email address. Groovy Kids strives to provide a safe, secure environment by attempting to limit access to the Groovy Kids database to legitimate users, but Groovy Kids cannot guarantee that unauthorized parties will not gain access.
V.Use of Information and Sharing Information
Groovy Kids uses the information collected solely for purposes of offering and providing interactive and educational online classes to students. Groovy Kids does not sell any personal information collected from students.
Groovy Kids may discloses personal information collected from students to third parties to set up student accounts to use third party educational services. The kinds of businesses to whom Groovy Kids discloses personal student information includes, but is not limited to: (1) Canvas, a web application that provides an open-source learning platform; (2) WizIQ, a webinar and virtual classroom software program; (3) iCivics, a nonprofit organization, which provides interactive content and services including videos, games and articles; (4) VoiceThread, a web-based communications network; (5) BrainPOP, an educational video program; (6) Code.org, an online computer science lesson coursework program; (7) TreeRing, a program for creating yearbooks online, and (8) Youth Leadership Initiative, an electronic student congress system.
Groovy Kids will also disclose the student’s information, if required to do so by law. Groovy Kids will not trade, sell, rent, lease, or otherwise share the student’s information to anyone, or let anyone use it except if the student and the parent have authorized its use.
The parent of the child has the option to agree to the collection and use of the child's information without consenting to the disclosure of the information to third parties and with the knowledge that exercising such option may affect the child’s ability to participate in the third party educational services.
Groovy Kids is concerned about safeguarding the confidentiality of student information and provides safeguards to protect information Groovy Kids processes and maintains. However, Groovy Kids urges students and parents to take every precaution to protect personal data on the Internet as no security system can prevent all potential security breaches. Please take proactive steps to secure personal data, such as frequently changing passwords.
VIII.Links to Third Party Sites
Groovy Kids website may contain links to other sites, including links to third party educational services, textbook websites, online programs, software, and other websites. Please be aware that Groovy Kids is not responsible for the content or privacy practices of such other sites. Groovy Kids encourages students and parents to learn about the privacy practices and policies of those companies.
Groovy Kids will not require a child to disclose more information than is reasonably necessary to participate in Groovy Kids services. At any time, parents have the right to determine how their child’s personal information will be used in the following ways:
•The parent(s)/legal guardian(s) can review their child’s personal information;
•The parent(s)/legal guardian(s) can direct Groovy Kids to delete the personal information;
•The parent(s)/legal guardian(s) can refuse to allow any further collection or use of the child’s information; and/or
•The parent(s)/legal guardian(s) can agree to the collection and use of their child’s information, but choose not to allow disclosure to third parties.
If parent(s)/legal guardian(s) refuse to allow any further collection or use of the child’s information or the disclosure of personal information to third parties, it is with the understanding that the child may be limited in his or her participation in Groovy Kids educational services.
To request any of the actions described above, the parent must submit a written request by email to Groovy Kids at firstname.lastname@example.org.
X.Changes to Policy
Groovy Kids Online may periodically update this policy. Groovy Kids will post a prominent notice on the Groovy Kids website (www.onlineclasseforgroovykids.org) to notify you of any material changes.
